Operation of the Rohloff gearbox

The operating principle of the Rohloff gearbox is relatively simple. Its internal structure consists of three sets of planetary gears, the first two of which provide seven ratios, and the third a halved. This effectively doubles the number of gears to fourteen.

Shifting is provided by a handlebar-mounted bolt-on shifter with two cables that actuate an indexing mechanism in the hub, shifting up or down. When reaching seventh gear (shifting up or down), the hub changes from high to low (or vice versa), moving through the seven gears.

The indexing is controlled by a transfer box mounted in roughly the same place as the rear derailleur (on the opposite side). This receives the cables from the derailleur and transfers the rotational action in the box to the indexing mechanism inside the hub. The transfer case is easily detached by loosening the single hand-release screw to remove the rear wheel.

Oil change

The Rohloff Speedhub runs on oil and requires an occasional oil change. The manufacturer's requirement is that once a year or approx. change the oil after 5,000 kilometers. The hub contains 25 ml of oil, which you can buy from our webshop. Changing the oil is important for proper operation and smooth shifting. The oil change can be performed by anyone who knows the specific maintenance process of Rohloff hubs using the oil change set

Inspection and cleaning

From time to time it is worth checking the condition of the gearbox and cleaning the external surfaces. Check the transmission for visible damage, cracks, or other problems. Clean the exterior surfaces with a soft cloth or brush to remove dirt and grime. A small oil leak is normal, but you should pay attention to a larger oil leak.

For more complex maintenance tasks or possible repairs, the hub must be taken to the official partners of the worldwide service network on the Rohloff website. Official Rohloff service partners are professionals trained by Rohloff who meet Rohloff's requirements.
